Die lebensgro\u00dfe Edelstahl-Skulptur wurde im Jahr 1997 von dem Goldschmied und Metallbildhauer\u00a0<strong>Albert Sous<\/strong>\u00a0aus W\u00fcrselen bei Aachen geschaffen. Sie wurde von Kardinal Karl Lehmann anl\u00e4\u00dflich des 1600. Todestag des\u00a0<strong>Martin von Tours<\/strong>\u00a0in Auftrag gegeben, jenes Heiligen Martin, von dem man sich erz\u00e4hlt, er habe seinen wertvollen Umhang mit einem frierenden Bettler geteilt. Diese Geschichte wird bis heute in allen christlichen Kirchen als Beispiel f\u00fcr das selbstlose Teilen mit Bed\u00fcrftigen erz\u00e4hlt. Ihm zu Ehren feiern insbesondere die katholischen Christen den Martinstag, an dem die Kinder mit selbstgebastelten Laternen singend durch die Stra\u00dfen ziehen.
