Die \u00e4ltesten Teile der Burg stammen aus dem 15. Jahrhundert. Sie war eine wichtige Residenz des Campbell Clans in Zentralschottland. Wichtige Pers\u00f6nlichkeiten, wie der Reformator John Knox oder die schottische K\u00f6nigin Maria Stuart waren hier im 16. Jahrhundert zu Gast. W\u00e4hrend des &#8222;Englischen B\u00fcrgerkrieges&#8220; wurde die Burg im Jahr 1645 niedergebrannt und 1654 abermals besch\u00e4digt.
